Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles History
It's hard to imagine the world of motorcycles without Harley-Davidson! The company is an industry giant today, but even leaders have to get their start somewhere. If you've ever wondered about the company's history, read on!
The Start of Harley-Davidson
Two childhood friends known as William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson founded the company. Their first efforts were creating single-cylinder engines to improve the basic pedal bike design. The creation worked, but it lacked the power to propel itself up the steep hills of Milwaukee. They went back to the drawing board to create an engine that worked on a bike without pedals. This set themselves up to release Harley motorcycles in 1904.
The partners continued working to improve their designs. Harley motorcycles gained popularity and eventually, they opened the first Harley-Davidson factory. This allowed them to product Harley bikes at a much higher pace. Seven years later, their engines operated at twice the horsepower of their first engines. These speed demons soon found their way onto the racetrack.
Creating a Name for Harley-Davidson
Harley saw a successful launch of the company, and then, World War One created a high need for motorcycles for the troops. Harley-Davidson got an order for 20,000 motorcycles. With the end of 1920, the company earned the title "largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet". Everyone wanted their own Harley bike!
When the Great Depression hit, Harley-Davidson was one of two motorcycle manufacturers that remained continually operating. Even in the darkest of times people still wanted Harley motorcycles! When World War Two hit, the company got an order for 90,000 Harley motorcycles.
